10:57 pm EMS 150 took a little field trip today.. over to durham EMS.
i've been around durham for a long time, but carpooling with my instructor made me feel like a tourist.
Lee is a paramedic with durham EMS, and while we were on the southside, he kept pointing out various places and telling stories. like the convienent store where a robber shot the owner, but the bullet fragmented on a metal pen in his pocket, so the trama was reduced. in return, the owner pulls a .45 and shoots the robber, who dies in 15 minutes. or on the durham freeway, he points out an embankment where a driver ran over the edge and had his car cut in two by a tree, was partially thrown from the vehicle, and ended up having both his legs amputated onsite by a hospital trama surgeon who was driven out.
beyond that, durham EMS was a pretty laid back place, even if calls were constantly coming in. pay and benefits look nice, and they are constantly growing and taking on more EMT-I and paramedic positions.
i love this shit.

09:24 pm a couple days ago, i stopped by my local camera shop to look at nikkor lenses. i left, and twenty minutes later returned with my kit.
this kit was given to me by my father. a canon F1 (1974) with four lenses and numerous other pieces of various equipment. i'll be damned if i didn't love the thing, but i seldom used it now that i have my nikon, and, all this stuff which i had not touched for months, which my father paid thousands of dollars for, i was having a cranky middle-aged man named steve inspect for a trade-in.
i got about $200 store credit for the body and four lenses. i then, in what steve called "the shortest store credit in history", immediately spent this on buying a new nikkor AF 70-300mm* f4-5.6 D lens. which was $349.
this thing is fucking amazing. sometimes, when i shoot with it, i think i'm looking through time.
( look ) 1/3200s f6.3 300mm ISO 640
*also, because my nikon has a small-frame sensor, it creates a multiplier effect. my 300mm lens, functions as a 450mm lens. this might mean nothing to you.

02:02 am in leiu of nornal social activity, because my friends are AWOL, i go driving. events along my journey include:
-a girl requested me to stand nearby with my truck's headlamps on as she used an ATM in an underlit parking lot. -two rowdy (and possibly) homeless guys bothering me for some money while i was waiting at a stoplight. one banged on my truck as i drove the green light. -holding an entirely un-enlightening conversation with two drunk guys at char-grill. -one of them used my truck for support as he urinated in the parking lot, then proceeded to harass a woman eating in her car. -had a man on bicycle fly from a side street, pulling in front of me. -being yelled at from outdoor patrons of a bar on hillsborough street. no good reason.
